Mendoza is the Raiders' new face under center. Grade: D. The war room fell hard for Pat Coogan, and it showed at the Round 6 slot: 50 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Put together, it is a D.
So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
Getting Allen where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In No. 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Pick16
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
They did well to land Jermod McCoy in pick No. 16, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick27
Rnd1
Caleb Banks
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Dani Dennis-Sutton
A reach on Dani Dennis-Sutton in the 36th overall pick; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick58
Rnd2
CJ Allen
CJ Allen at the 58th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick67
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington at Round 3, Pick 3 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Deontae Lawson worth more than the price. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick102
Rnd4
Carter Smith
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Carter Smith at the 102nd pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick106
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A reach for D'Angelo Ponds in slot 106; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
By-the-book stuff, Jalon Kilgore at the 117th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick118
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller at pick 118 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick134
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price at pick No. 134 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick155
Rnd5
Jakobe Thomas
They let Jakobe Thomas come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 17. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez in No. 174 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick180
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at the 180th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182
Rnd6
Lander Barton
Lander Barton at Round 6, Pick 1 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick185
Rnd6
Oscar Delp
They jumped the gun on Oscar Delp, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick188
Rnd6
Bud Clark
A real head-scratcher, Bud Clark in No. 188 is miles ahead of his ranking. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick209
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at slot 209 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick219
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart in pick No. 219 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick222
Rnd7
Sawyer Robertson
Taking Sawyer Robertson in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
