FutureB-
The Raiders bet the future on Mendoza. The board says D-. The Pat Coogan selection is the head-turner. The Raiders reached 38 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Whatever Fernando Mendoza becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The Raiders indulged a want in Lawson while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Lew value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 1st overall pick they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick17
Rnd1
LT Overton
In the 17th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick46
Rnd2
CJ Allen
A reasonable price with a little left over, CJ Allen in Round 2, Pick 14. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick67
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
A want over a need in pick 67: Deontae Lawson adds a linebacker while interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick76
Rnd3
Connor Lew
Connor Lew at pick No. 76 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick77
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
They paid a round early for Omar Cooper Jr. in slot 77, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick102
Rnd4
Xavier Chaplin
Xavier Chaplin in No. 102 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
Fair-plus on D'Angelo Ponds, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
No drama and no debate, Jalon Kilgore went about where he belonged in the 118th overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick134
Rnd4
DJ McKinney
Good price on DJ McKinney in pick No. 134, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick155
Rnd5
Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick174
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for DJ Campbell. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180
Rnd5
Jalen Stroman
Jalen Stroman at Round 5, Pick 42 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick182
Rnd6
Lander Barton
Lander Barton at the 182nd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick185
Rnd6
Oscar Delp
They jumped the gun on Oscar Delp, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick188
Rnd6
Duce Robinson
A tidy little value on Duce Robinson in pick 188, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick209
Rnd6
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss in pick No. 209 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick219
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
They let Evan Stewart come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick222
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
A big swing on Pat Coogan at Round 7, Pick 6, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
