Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall

FutureB
Mendoza is the plan now, and the Raiders grade out a D-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Raiders did exactly that with Pat Coogan in No. 222. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Whatever Fernando Mendoza becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.
The Raiders indulged a want in Lawson while a need in running back and tight end stayed open. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Pick16
Rnd1
LT Overton
In the 16th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17
Rnd1
Dani Dennis-Sutton
In pick 17 they get juice off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
A tidy little value on Anthony Hill Jr. in the 36th pick, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick67
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington in No. 67 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
A surprising call. With running back and tight end still to address, they spent pick No. 76 on Deontae Lawson, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick102
Rnd4
Jake Golday
Jake Golday at the 102nd overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick117
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
A safety of that caliber at the 117th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick118
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
Fair-plus on D'Angelo Ponds, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick134
Rnd4
DJ McKinney
They did well to land DJ McKinney in No. 134, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick155
Rnd5
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick174
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
A real head-scratcher, DJ Campbell in slot 174 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick180
Rnd5
Kyle Louis
Nothing to complain about; Kyle Louis went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick182
Rnd6
Aamil Wagner
No edge and no loss on Aamil Wagner in Round 6, Pick 1; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick185
Rnd6
Duce Robinson
Duce Robinson in the 185th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick188
Rnd6
Lander Barton
Lander Barton at pick No. 188 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick209
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at No. 209 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick219
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at Round 7, Pick 3 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick222
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Pat Coogan. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
