The Raiders drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: D-. The tape said wait; the Raiders did not. Pat Coogan went at pick 219, a good 41 picks before the board was ready. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
That Stewart pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick17
Rnd1
Matayo Uiagalelei
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon at pick No. 36 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
Nothing to complain about; Deontae Lawson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick118
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller in pick 118 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick155
Rnd5
Jakobe Thomas
A tidy bit of business in the 155th pick, where Jakobe Thomas graded well above the range. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick174
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
This one needs a full-page explanation: DJ Campbell in slot 174, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick180
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick182
Rnd6
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at pick No. 182 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick185
Rnd6
Lander Barton
Lander Barton in No. 185 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick188
Rnd6
Bud Clark
A wild overpay on Bud Clark in Round 6, Pick 7, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick209
Rnd6
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss at the 209th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick219
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Pat Coogan well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick222
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at pick 222 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
