Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
D-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Steelers let Styles fall and pounced. Final grade: D-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Jordan Hall at the Round 6 slot, a reach of 30 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Steelers indulged a want in Davis while a need in edge rusher and running back stayed open.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 21st pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, and a steal at that.
Pick33
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
They paid sticker price for Olaivavega Ioane in No. 33, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick53
Rnd2
Keith Abney II
They let Keith Abney II come to them and pounced at pick No. 53. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76
Rnd3
Sonny Styles
The board fumbled Sonny Styles all the way to pick 76, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick85
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
The board had Zakee Wheatley higher than the 85th pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick99
Rnd3
Daylen Everette
Fair-plus on Daylen Everette, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick121
Rnd4
J.C. Davis
A want over a need in the 121st overall pick: J.C. Davis adds an offensive lineman while edge rusher and running back keeps waiting.
Pick135
Rnd4
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at pick No. 135 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick159
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
Ted Hurst is a better player than slot 159 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick213
Rnd6
Brett Norfleet
No edge and no loss on Brett Norfleet in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jordan Hall
They reached into another round for Jordan Hall, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick224
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in pick 224 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jalen Catalon
A quiet steal in slot 237: Jalen Catalon for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
