FutureC-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Rams: B. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Rams took Traeshon Holden at the 234th overall pick, roughly 138 spots before his name belonged.
Getting Neal where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Rams indulged a want in Hill while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick40
Rnd2
Will Campbell
They robbed the room for Will Campbell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick60
Rnd2
Shavon Revel Jr.
Shavon Revel Jr. at Round 2, Pick 28 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick61
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts at pick No. 61 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
They did well to land Deontae Lawson in slot 85, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick101
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
Nothing to complain about; Tez Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick124
Rnd4
Tommi Hill
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 124 on Tommi Hill with interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick130
Rnd4
Earnest Greene III
This one needs a full-page explanation: Earnest Greene III in pick No. 130, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Devin Neal
Taking Devin Neal in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick189
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
They talked themselves into Tyler Batty at the 189th pick, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick194
Rnd6
Kevin Jennings
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kevin Jennings well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Pick198
Rnd6
Chris Paul Jr.
Circle this one: Chris Paul Jr. at the 198th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick210
Rnd6
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers at Round 6, Pick 35 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick234
Rnd7
Traeshon Holden
A real head-scratcher, Traeshon Holden in pick 234 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
