FutureA+
The Raiders worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Raiders would have aced it. Monroe Freeling at pick No. 67 is 42 spots clear of where he belonged. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
The Allen pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, tight end and other spots. The Campbell value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Arvell Reese and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 12th overall pick they get a green-dot type in the middle. More want than need.
Pick20
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
Avieon Terrell at pick No. 20 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick36
Rnd2
CJ Allen
A want over a need in slot 36: CJ Allen adds a linebacker while edge rusher, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick67
Rnd3
Monroe Freeling
They talked themselves into Monroe Freeling at No. 67, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick102
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
Trinidad Chambliss in the 102nd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Jalon Kilgore. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick134
Rnd4
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ar'maj Reed-Adams in pick 134. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell is a better player than slot 177 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick180
Rnd6
Quinten Joyner
A reach on Quinten Joyner in No. 180; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick183
Rnd6
Dane Key
No drama and no debate, Dane Key went about where he belonged in the 183rd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
They jumped the gun on Dominic Zvada, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
