The Raiders checked most of the boxes and earned a B. The tape said wait; the Raiders did not. Kamran James went at pick No. 219, a good 42 picks before the board was ready. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. Getting Nwankpa where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick No. 12 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. More want than need.
Pick16
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick20
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon at the 36th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick67
Rnd3
Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter at pick 67 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick102
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
They paid sticker price for D'Angelo Ponds in the 102nd pick, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick117
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
Trinidad Chambliss in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Ted Hurst
They jumped the gun on Ted Hurst, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick174
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
Value with a capital V on Xavier Nwankpa in No. 174, a genuine coup. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick180
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick 180 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick183
Rnd6
Eric O'Neill
They talked themselves into Eric O'Neill at the 183rd pick, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick219
Rnd7
Kamran James
Kamran James in Round 7, Pick 3 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
