Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA+
The Commanders answered their biggest question with Mendoza. Grade: D+. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Commanders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Put together, it is a D+.
So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. The James pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Styles falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 1st overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick7
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In slot 7 they get a downhill hitter at safety. Need was not the driver here.
Pick36
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Caleb Banks at the 36th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick57
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
You do not let a linebacker like Sonny Styles reach No. 57 and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick67
Rnd3
Will Lee III
The board had Will Lee III higher than pick No. 67, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at Round 3, Pick 7 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick102
Rnd4
Daylen Everette
They let Daylen Everette come to them and pounced at the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds at pick 117 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick129
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
Trinidad Chambliss slid further than he should have, and pick 129 is lovely value for the quarterback. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick134
Rnd4
CJ Daniels
Nothing to complain about; CJ Daniels went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick145
Rnd5
Kage Casey
They read the board right and Kage Casey was the payoff at the Round 5 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
A quiet steal in Round 5, Pick 25: Ted Hurst for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick174
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
Nice patience on Xavier Nwankpa, who had no business lasting to No. 174. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick180
Rnd6
Bud Clark
No drama and no debate, Bud Clark went about where he belonged in the 180th overall pick. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick183
Rnd6
Raylen Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Raylen Wilson at the 183rd pick, value and slot in agreement. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick185
Rnd6
Jaren Kanak
Jaren Kanak at slot 185 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick196
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Zuhn III. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
They jumped the gun on Dominic Zvada, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick223
Rnd7
Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney at the 223rd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Kamran James
A real head-scratcher, Kamran James in Round 7, Pick 23 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
