FutureA+
The Colts got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C. There is reaching, and then there is Xavier Truss at Round 7, Pick 30. The Colts jumped the board by 57 and dared it to prove them wrong. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Emmanwori. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
The Winston Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots.
Hit on Nick Emmanwori and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick47
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Nick Emmanwori in the 47th pick, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick57
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
Azareye'h Thomas in the 57th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick68
Rnd3
Deone Walker
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deone Walker. It fills a real need, too.
Pick72
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
The board had TreVeyon Henderson higher than No. 72, and the running back fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick80
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
No drama and no debate, Barrett Carter went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 16. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick84
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at pick No. 84 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick102
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick104
Rnd4
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at No. 104 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick105
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at the 105th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick112
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
A conviction pick on Emery Jones Jr. at pick No. 112 that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick114
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
A surprising call. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 13 on Kevin Winston Jr., a safety they were not short of.
Pick116
Rnd4
Jack Nelson
They jumped the gun on Jack Nelson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick118
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
A reach for Darius Alexander in pick 118; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick122
Rnd4
O'Donnell Fortune
A curious use of the 122nd overall pick. Wide receiver, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in O'Donnell Fortune did not.
Pick123
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Brashard Smith. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jeffrey Bassa
They took Jeffrey Bassa at par in the 129th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick141
Rnd5
Kobe King
Good price on Kobe King in slot 141, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick149
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
This one needs a full-page explanation: JJ Pegues in pick 149, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick210
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A premium they did not need to pay, Jamon Dumas-Johnson a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick248
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss at pick No. 248 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
