Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Commanders worked the phones like thieves and earned a B. Whoever sat across the table from the Commanders should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The Payton reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Stewart.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick71
Rnd3
Josiah Trotter
The board had Josiah Trotter higher than pick 71, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick115
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
No edge and no loss on Chase Bisontis in slot 115; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick145
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
Aaron Graves at No. 145 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick152
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
They went early on DJ Campbell in the 152nd pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick160
Rnd5
Zane Durant
Zane Durant at Round 5, Pick 22 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick161
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
They paid sticker price for Jermaine Mathews Jr. in the 161st overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick172
Rnd5
Terion Stewart
Terion Stewart slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick173
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at pick No. 173 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick185
Rnd6
Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon at the 185th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick194
Rnd6
Miller Moss
Good price on Miller Moss in pick 194, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick196
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Zuhn III at pick No. 196, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick223
Rnd7
Isaac Smith
Fair-plus on Isaac Smith, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jalen Catalon
Jalen Catalon at slot 234 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick240
Rnd7
Tony Grimes
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tony Grimes in the 240th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
Jordan Hall in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Colbie Young
Colbie Young in No. 252 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
