The Patriots got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They will need Lawrence to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Getting Thieneman where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. More want than need.
Pick30
Rnd1
Colton Hood
In the 30th overall pick they get an island corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick40
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
They took Olaivavega Ioane at par in pick 40, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick62
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Dillon Thieneman in the 62nd pick, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick65
Rnd3
Max Klare
Max Klare at No. 65 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick89
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields slid further than he should have, and slot 89 is lovely value for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick109
Rnd4
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence at pick No. 109 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125
Rnd4
J.C. Davis
No edge and no loss on J.C. Davis in No. 125; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick130
Rnd4
CJ Daniels
They paid sticker price for CJ Daniels in the 130th overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick168
Rnd5
Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III at Round 5, Pick 30 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick189
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster in pick No. 189 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick200
Rnd6
Luke Altmyer
Luke Altmyer in pick 200 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
A tidy little value on Jordan Hall in slot 246, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
