Nobody dealt better than the Panthers this weekend: B+. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Panthers did exactly that with Davin Vann in pick 230. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. That King pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 27th pick they get a downhill hitter at safety. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
They went early on Donovan Ezeiruaku in the Round 2 slot, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick58
Rnd2
Harold Fannin Jr.
Harold Fannin Jr. at No. 58 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It fills a real need, too.
Pick59
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in Round 2, Pick 27 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick74
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in pick 74 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They took Danny Stutsman at par in the 85th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick111
Rnd4
Tory Horton
Tory Horton at pick 111 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick114
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant at pick No. 114 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick140
Rnd5
Kobe King
Nice patience on Kobe King, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 2. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick146
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
They paid a round early for Bhayshul Tuten in the 146th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick163
Rnd5
Ryan Fitzgerald
No drama and no debate, Ryan Fitzgerald went about where he belonged in slot 163. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick166
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
They jumped the gun on Jack Nelson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick176
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They paid sticker price for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 176, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick230
Rnd7
Davin Vann
This one needs a full-page explanation: Davin Vann in No. 230, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
