Best value of the weekend goes to the Panthers for Sanders: A-. Whoever sat across the table from the Panthers should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
The Sanders pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The veteran additions, Devin White chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
In the end it comes back to Shemar Stewart, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
In the 25th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
Good price on Jayden Higgins in No. 63, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
Cameron Williams in Round 3, Pick 10 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick89
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Fair-plus on Andrew Mukuba, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at pick No. 109 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick111
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
A clean, defensible pick in pick 111 with a little surplus value in Jordan Phillips. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick114
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke at slot 114 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick140
Rnd5
Kyle McCord
Steal is underselling it; Kyle McCord at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick146
Rnd5
Kaimon Rucker
A straight-up fair deal on Kaimon Rucker at the 146th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick166
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ty Robinson. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick177
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
The board had Seth McLaughlin higher than the 177th overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick206
Rnd6
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders at pick 206 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Pick230
Rnd7
Karene Reid
Taking Karene Reid in Round 7, Pick 14 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
They paid sticker price for LaJohntay Wester in pick No. 252, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
