Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Chargers a B. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Barryn Sorrell at pick 255, a reach of 60 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The Belton steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick34
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kenneth Grant at the 34th overall pick is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick56
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson is a better player than slot 56 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick65
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
They paid up for Elijah Arroyo at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick86
Rnd3
Sai'vion Jones
A real head-scratcher, Sai'vion Jones in pick 86 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick109
Rnd4
Pat Bryant
They talked themselves into Pat Bryant at Round 4, Pick 7, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick125
Rnd4
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the 125th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick158
Rnd5
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at Round 5, Pick 20 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick181
Rnd6
Clay Webb
Clay Webb at pick No. 181 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick199
Rnd6
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards at the 199th pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
They robbed the room for Jaylen Reed here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick214
Rnd6
R.J. Mickens
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing R.J. Mickens in pick 214. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick255
Rnd7
Barryn Sorrell
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barryn Sorrell. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
