Draft Grade — Bills
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Bills and Starks: D+.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bills shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.

The Hairston pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want. They will need Alexander to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Starks.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and linebacker is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
A quiet steal in the Round 1 slot: Kenneth Grant for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick47 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Taking Malaki Starks in No. 47 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick56 Rnd2 Trey Amos
Trey Amos is a better player than pick No. 56 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick62 Rnd2 Maxwell Hairston
A surprising call. With linebacker, edge rusher and other spots still to address, they spent the 62nd pick on Maxwell Hairston, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick77 Rnd3 Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander in Round 3, Pick 13 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick132 Rnd4 Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce at the 132nd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick173 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They liked Dont'e Thornton Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 173. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
