Draft Grade — Colts

FutureA+
The Colts got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Jasheen Davis in slot 230, a good 131 spots before the room expected him. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. With wide receiver and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. On value alone, Starks makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick49
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at slot 49 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick56
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Azareye'h Thomas. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick58
Rnd2
Demetrius Knight Jr.
They took Demetrius Knight Jr. at par in No. 58, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick65
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
The board had TreVeyon Henderson higher than the Round 3 slot, and the running back fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick67
Rnd3
Deone Walker
No drama and no debate, Deone Walker went about where he belonged in the 67th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 75 on Andrew Mukuba with wide receiver and quarterback unsolved.
Pick77
Rnd3
Darien Porter
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Wide receiver and quarterback needed the pick; a cornerback in Darien Porter did not.
Pick78
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
A straight-up fair deal on Mason Taylor at pick No. 78, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick81
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
No edge and no loss on Donovan Jackson in Round 3, Pick 17; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick104
Rnd4
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at the 104th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick105
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 105th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick107
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kevin Winston Jr. at safety with wide receiver and quarterback open.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
They paid sticker price for Jared Wilson in pick 109, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick110
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. in slot 110 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick114
Rnd4
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson in slot 114 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick123
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
They liked Darius Alexander enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 123. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick126
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the running back. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick162
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They reached into another round for JJ Pegues, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick169
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant at the 169th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick No. 181 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick197
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II in Round 6, Pick 19 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick207
Rnd6
Moliki Matavao
They reached a country mile for Moliki Matavao at the 207th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jasheen Davis
A real head-scratcher, Jasheen Davis in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick249
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss at slot 249 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
