Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA+
The Commanders drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: D. The Gabe Jacas pick is the one that will follow the Commanders into the fall. They took him 30 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Everything downstream of Fernando Mendoza depends on Fernando Mendoza, and the building knows it. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Perkins Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end and running back still on the board. However the rest shakes out, Slaughter at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In slot 1 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick7
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 7th overall pick they get a downhill hitter at safety at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38
Rnd2
CJ Allen
CJ Allen at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick67
Rnd3
Gabe Jacas
Gabe Jacas at No. 67 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at pick 71 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102
Rnd4
Harold Perkins Jr.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Harold Perkins Jr. while clear needs at tight end and running back sat open.
Pick117
Rnd4
Xavier Scott
Fair-plus on Xavier Scott, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick134
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
The board had Keylan Rutledge higher than slot 134, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick145
Rnd5
Albert Regis
They paid a round early for Albert Regis in No. 145, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick177
Rnd5
Earnest Greene III
A reasonable price with a little left over, Earnest Greene III in Round 5, Pick 39. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick180
Rnd6
Brenen Thompson
They robbed the room for Brenen Thompson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick183
Rnd6
Bud Clark
No drama and no debate, Bud Clark went about where he belonged in pick No. 183. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick185
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
A tidy little value on Eric McAlister in pick 185, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick196
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They paid up for Trey Zuhn III at the 196th pick when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick219
Rnd7
Diego Pavia
Diego Pavia slid further than he should have, and slot 219 is lovely value for the quarterback. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick223
Rnd7
Keyron Crawford
A conviction pick on Keyron Crawford at No. 223 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
