FutureA+
Quarterback settled, Mendoza in the fold, and a D for the Patriots. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Jordan Hall at No. 246, a reach of 44 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
They will answer for taking linebacker early while tight end went begging. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
However the rest shakes out, Slaughter at that price is a win they earned.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 1st pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick30
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick No. 30 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick33
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
A conviction pick on Olaivavega Ioane at pick 33 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
Kayden McDonald at No. 35 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick36
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A surprising call. With tight end still to address, they spent slot 36 on Sonny Styles, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at Round 2, Pick 30 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick65
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington at slot 65 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
They paid a round early for Malachi Fields in pick 68, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Cayden Green
Cayden Green slid further than he should have, and pick No. 94 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick95
Rnd3
Genesis Smith
Fair-plus on Genesis Smith, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101
Rnd4
Adon Shuler
A quiet steal in the 101st overall pick: Adon Shuler for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick108
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick118
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller at the 118th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jadarian Price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick130
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
The board fumbled Chris Johnson all the way to the 130th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick132
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
No drama and no debate, Bray Hubbard went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick134
Rnd4
Chase Roberts
The board had cheaper options than Chase Roberts at slot 134, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick136
Rnd4
LJ Martin
They went early on LJ Martin in Round 4, Pick 36, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick138
Rnd4
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor in pick No. 138 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Pick140
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
A reach for Jacob Rodriguez in No. 140; a little patience would have been rewarded. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick142
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at pick 142 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick143
Rnd5
Vincent Anthony Jr.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Vincent Anthony Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick169
Rnd5
Duce Robinson
Duce Robinson in Round 5, Pick 30 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick191
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick No. 191 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick201
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
They talked themselves into Pat Coogan at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick208
Rnd6
Ricardo Hallman
They reached into another round for Ricardo Hallman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick211
Rnd6
Hykeem Williams
Value said wait; Hykeem Williams in the 211th overall pick says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
A wild overpay on Jordan Hall in slot 246, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
