mmm DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-

NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Eli Heidenreich, taking him 50 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Wheatley at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Emmanuel Pregnon
In the 27th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane at pick No. 58 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley slid further than he should have, and No. 92 is lovely value for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick127
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Parker Brailsford at Round 4, Pick 27. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick133
Rnd4
Nadame Tucker
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nadame Tucker in pick 133, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick138
Rnd4
Aaron Graves
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Aaron Graves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick171
Rnd5
Eli Heidenreich
Eli Heidenreich in pick No. 171 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
