Draft Grade — Saints
Overall

ValueB

TradesA+
FutureA+
The Saints let Thomas fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Saints watched Azareye'h Thomas slide 38 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They are betting Buchanan proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In pick No. 17 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick21
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Omarion Hampton at the 40th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick53
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in pick 53 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick71
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in Round 3, Pick 7 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick76
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mason Taylor. The roster fit checks out.
Pick81
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. at the 81st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick83
Rnd3
Will Howard
Value said wait; Will Howard in No. 83 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick93
Rnd3
Azareye'h Thomas
Taking Azareye'h Thomas in slot 93 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick112
Rnd4
Savion Williams
Steal is underselling it; Savion Williams at the 112th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick117
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
They took Emery Jones Jr. at par in No. 117, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick121
Rnd4
Cody Simon
The board had cheaper options than Cody Simon at pick No. 121, and it noticed. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick131
Rnd4
Billy Bowman Jr.
A safety of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 29 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick149
Rnd5
Mello Dotson
A quiet steal in the 149th overall pick: Mello Dotson for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick156
Rnd5
Jah Joyner
Jah Joyner at pick 156 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick184
Rnd6
CJ West
No edge and no loss on CJ West in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick189
Rnd6
Ajani Cornelius
Nice patience on Ajani Cornelius, who had no business lasting to the 189th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick232
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at the 232nd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick248
Rnd7
Cam Horsley
A clean, defensible pick in pick 248 with a little surplus value in Cam Horsley. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick254
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner in pick No. 254 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
