FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Colts to a D+. The Colts bet big and early on Xavier Truss, 111 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
The Gordon II pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Colts indulged a want in Hairston while a need in wide receiver, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick49
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at pick No. 49 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick56
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
They paid sticker price for Azareye'h Thomas in slot 56, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick59
Rnd2
Deone Walker
They went early on Deone Walker in the 59th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick62
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
They barely believed it either: Malaki Starks still on the board at No. 62. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick65
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
A surprising call. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick 65 on Maxwell Hairston, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in the 72nd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick77
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Xavier Watts while clear needs at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Pick82
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Emery Jones Jr. this early at the 82nd pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick99
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
They will replay Demetrius Knight Jr. at No. 99 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Pick101
Rnd3
Jack Nelson
They talked themselves into Jack Nelson at the 101st overall pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick102
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach slot 102 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick105
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Andrew Mukuba in pick 105 leaves wide receiver, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick117
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
A reach for Darius Alexander in Round 4, Pick 16; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick120
Rnd4
Barrett Carter
The board fumbled Barrett Carter all the way to pick No. 120, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Value with a capital V on Jared Wilson in pick 123, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick129
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
They robbed the room for Mason Taylor here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick150
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant at pick No. 150 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick153
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A wild overpay on JJ Pegues in No. 153, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick165
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. in the 165th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
Pick186
Rnd6
Connor Colby
Connor Colby in slot 186 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick192
Rnd6
Brashard Smith
Somehow Brashard Smith was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 14, and they pounced on premier running back value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick193
Rnd6
Xavier Truss
A big swing on Xavier Truss at the 193rd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick234
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in Round 7, Pick 16 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick235
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick 235 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick255
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at pick No. 255 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
