Grand theft in the 185th overall pick: the Commanders steal Thompson and grade out a B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Brenen Thompson, the No. 162 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 185th pick. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Reaching for O'Neill left real value on the table behind him. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In slot 15 they get the heartbeat of the defense, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick71
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
Steal is underselling it; A.J. Haulcy at the Round 3 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick116
Rnd4
Xavier Scott
Xavier Scott at the 116th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick145
Rnd5
David Oke
They paid sticker price for David Oke in the 145th overall pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick185
Rnd6
Brenen Thompson
Taking Brenen Thompson in pick 185 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick196
Rnd6
Eric O'Neill
A big swing on Eric O'Neill at No. 196, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick208
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They took Trey Zuhn III at par in pick No. 208, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick223
Rnd7
Diego Pavia
Diego Pavia at Round 7, Pick 7 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick232
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
They did well to land J. Michael Sturdivant in the 232nd pick, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick250
Rnd7
Micah Morris
Micah Morris in pick 250 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick256
Rnd7
Tony Grimes
Tony Grimes is a better player than Round 7, Pick 40 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
