The board had answers; the Seahawks had Kiser. Grade: F. Nobody else had Jack Kiser anywhere near pick 136. The Seahawks did, by 48 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. With wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. Emmanwori falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In pick 18 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Nick Emmanwori in the 35th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick39
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Good price on Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 39, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick41
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A curious use of the Round 2 slot. Wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Malaki Starks did not.
Pick82
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
They took Chris Paul Jr. at par in No. 82, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick92
Rnd3
Deone Walker
A tidy bit of business in slot 92, where Deone Walker graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick129
Rnd4
Dorian Strong
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dorian Strong in pick 129. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick136
Rnd4
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser at No. 136 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick137
Rnd4
Jonas Sanker
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jonas Sanker adds a safety and leaves wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Pick175
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They paid a round early for JJ Pegues in pick No. 175, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick223
Rnd7
Caleb Ransaw
They let Caleb Ransaw come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 7. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick234
Rnd7
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway in the 234th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick243
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
A tidy little value on Jermari Harris in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
