Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
C
ValueB-

FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Bengals to a C. The Bengals bet big and early on Desmond Watson, 35 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. The final tally is a middling C.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. With cornerback, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them.
Stutsman at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick Analysis
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Booker. The roster fit checks out.
Pick49
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in pick No. 49 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick54
Rnd2
Marcus Mbow
Good price on Marcus Mbow in the 54th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick90
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Value with a capital V on Andrew Mukuba in slot 90, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick103
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman at Round 4, Pick 1 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick119
Rnd4
Chimere Dike
Chimere Dike at No. 119 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick120
Rnd4
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton at pick 120 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick127
Rnd4
Sai'vion Jones
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went edge rusher with Sai'vion Jones while clear needs at cornerback, tight end and other spots sat open.
Pick141
Rnd5
Rylie Mills
Rylie Mills in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick153
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at Round 5, Pick 15 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick167
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
A straight-up fair deal on Seth McLaughlin at pick No. 167, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick193
Rnd6
Raheim Sanders
A tidy bit of business in the 193rd pick, where Raheim Sanders graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick195
Rnd6
CJ West
They did well to land CJ West in No. 195, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick198
Rnd6
Clay Webb
No drama and no debate, Clay Webb went about where he belonged in slot 198. It fills a real need, too.
Pick201
Rnd6
Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson in slot 201 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick202
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 202. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
