More right than wrong for the Chargers, and a B to prove it. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Teddye Buchanan in Round 7, Pick 10, a good 24 spots before the room expected him. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Campbell pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In No. 30 they get a security blanket over the middle at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick55
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 55 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick63
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson at the 63rd overall pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick86
Rnd3
Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick125
Rnd4
Nohl Williams
They took Nohl Williams at par in Round 4, Pick 23, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jake Majors
No edge and no loss on Jake Majors in slot 133; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick158
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at slot 158 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick181
Rnd6
Kyle Williams
The board had Kyle Williams higher than the Round 6 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
By-the-book stuff, Jaylen Reed at Round 6, Pick 9 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick209
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
A reasonable price with a little left over, Joshua Gray in the 209th overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick214
Rnd6
Simeon Barrow Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Simeon Barrow Jr. a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick226
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan in pick No. 226 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick257
Rnd7
Jahvaree Ritzie
Jahvaree Ritzie at the 257th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
