The Cowboys fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. Nobody had J.J. Weaver this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 146 spots to get him at pick 249.
They banked enough surplus on James to cover a lot of smaller sins. The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Jonathan Taylor leading the way.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In slot 30 they get a red-zone target to build around, outstanding value to boot.
Pick44
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 44, where Derrick Harmon graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick76
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Value with a capital V on Demetrius Knight Jr. in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick108
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
They paid sticker price for Jordan Phillips in Round 4, Pick 7, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jackson Slater
Jackson Slater at pick 150 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick170
Rnd5
Jordan James
Jordan James at No. 170 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171
Rnd5
Emery Jones Jr.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Emery Jones Jr. in No. 171, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick172
Rnd5
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
They reached into another round for KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick174
Rnd5
Robert Spears-Jennings
Robert Spears-Jennings in pick 174 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick190
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jamon Dumas-Johnson this early at the 190th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock at pick No. 191 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick211
Rnd6
Ja'Quinden Jackson
Circle this one: Ja'Quinden Jackson at slot 211 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick249
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
A wild overpay on J.J. Weaver in Round 7, Pick 31, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
