The phones sank the Lions this weekend: C. The phones were a trap the Lions kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
Reaching for Reed left real value on the table behind him. They banked enough surplus on Golden to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
So much rides on Matthew Golden that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In pick No. 31 they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jack Sawyer
Good price on Jack Sawyer in the 63rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick102
Rnd3
Jordan Phillips
They paid sticker price for Jordan Phillips in slot 102, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jake Majors
A reach on Jake Majors in Round 4, Pick 19; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at the 130th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick141
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
They liked Luke Kandra enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 141. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick157
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough at the Round 5 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick167
Rnd5
Jaylen Reed
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylen Reed well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at No. 196 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick206
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. at the 206th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick228
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey at pick 228 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Pick244
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A tidy little value on Isaac TeSlaa in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
