Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Texans: B-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Texans took Cayden Green at the 66th overall pick, roughly 24 spots before his name belonged. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. Singleton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Jake Slaughter
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick37
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
A tidy little value on Kayden McDonald in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick53
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Good price on Olaivavega Ioane in the 53rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick66
Rnd3
Cayden Green
A wild overpay on Cayden Green in pick 66, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Pick68
Rnd3
Darrell Jackson Jr.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 68 with a little surplus value in Darrell Jackson Jr.. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick108
Rnd4
Nicholas Singleton
They read the board right and Nicholas Singleton was the payoff at slot 108. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick121
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in No. 121 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick147
Rnd5
Sammy Omosigho
Sammy Omosigho at the 147th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick162
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
They paid sticker price for Jacob Rodriguez in Round 5, Pick 22, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick207
Rnd6
Quinten Joyner
Quinten Joyner in slot 207 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick237
Rnd7
Malik Hartford
Malik Hartford at the Round 7 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick241
Rnd7
Khalil Barnes
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Khalil Barnes at pick No. 241. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
