A costly weekend of dealing drags the Steelers to a C-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Eric Gentry; the Steelers did not wait, grabbing him 76 spots ahead at Round 6, Pick 13. A mixed bag that lands at C-.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. However the rest shakes out, Scott at that price is a win they earned. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In No. 16 they get the heartbeat of the defense, outstanding value to boot.
Pick21
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
They did well to land Makai Lemon in slot 21, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
They went early on Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the 53rd pick, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick76
Rnd3
Trinidad Chambliss
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trinidad Chambliss in pick No. 76, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85
Rnd3
Keionte Scott
Keionte Scott in the 85th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick121
Rnd4
Vincent Anthony Jr.
Vincent Anthony Jr. in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kevin Coleman Jr.
A reach for Kevin Coleman Jr. in pick No. 135; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick159
Rnd5
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss at pick 159 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
Pick178
Rnd5
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at No. 178 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick192
Rnd6
Eric Gentry
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eric Gentry. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick213
Rnd6
Fernando Carmona
They paid sticker price for Fernando Carmona in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick214
Rnd6
Isaac Smith
They took Isaac Smith at par in the 214th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick224
Rnd7
Luke Hasz
They reached into another round for Luke Hasz, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick237
Rnd7
Tony Grimes
By-the-book stuff, Tony Grimes at the 237th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
