Draft Grade — Patriots

FutureD
The Patriots won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B. Nobody else had Eric O'Neill anywhere near the Round 5 slot. The Patriots did, by 43 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Trigg pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
The board had Caleb Banks higher than No. 41, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Emmanuel Pregnon
Emmanuel Pregnon in pick 72 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick95
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Omar Cooper Jr. at Round 3, Pick 31 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick105
Rnd4
Emmett Johnson
Emmett Johnson in the 105th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick110
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A tidy little value on D'Angelo Ponds in the 110th pick, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick118
Rnd4
Kevin Coleman Jr.
Kevin Coleman Jr. in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick125
Rnd4
Chase Roberts
Chase Roberts at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick131
Rnd4
Skyler Gill-Howard
No edge and no loss on Skyler Gill-Howard in No. 131; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick147
Rnd5
Michael Trigg
Circle this one: Michael Trigg at pick 147 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick155
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
Bryce Boettcher at slot 155 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick167
Rnd5
Eric O'Neill
A real head-scratcher, Eric O'Neill in the 167th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick169
Rnd5
Isaiah Nwokobia
They went early on Isaiah Nwokobia in pick No. 169, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick189
Rnd6
Kalil Alexander
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kalil Alexander in the 189th pick, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick200
Rnd6
Thaddeus Dixon
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Thaddeus Dixon in Round 6, Pick 21. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick204
Rnd6
Trebor Pena
A slide stopped in slot 204, with Trebor Pena worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick207
Rnd6
Nolan Rucci
They paid sticker price for Nolan Rucci in pick No. 207, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick210
Rnd6
Gunner Stockton
Gunner Stockton at the 210th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
Pick247
Rnd7
Ja'Keem Jackson
They paid up for Ja'Keem Jackson at pick 247 when waiting would have done the job. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick250
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
They reached into another round for Eric Gentry, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
