Draft Grade — Jets

FutureB-
The Jets drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: D-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Jets would have aced it. Princewill Umanmielen at the 208th overall pick is 50 spots clear of where he belonged. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Allar.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick22
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In slot 22 they get a weapon on the perimeter. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks at No. 33 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick96
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
They paid sticker price for Nicholas Singleton in pick No. 96, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick101
Rnd4
Harold Perkins Jr.
They took Harold Perkins Jr. at par in the 101st pick, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick119
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 19 with a little surplus value in Domani Jackson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick140
Rnd4
Terry Moore
A slide stopped in pick 140, with Terry Moore worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick156
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at the 156th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick183
Rnd6
Evan Stewart
By-the-book stuff, Evan Stewart at pick No. 183 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick201
Rnd6
Rasheem Biles
A reasonable price with a little left over, Rasheem Biles in the 201st overall pick. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick208
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Princewill Umanmielen. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick210
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
A reach for Bryce Foster in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick245
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
They paid a round early for Fernando Carmona in Round 7, Pick 28, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jamal Haynes
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jamal Haynes at No. 256 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Pick257
Rnd7
Kayin Lee
A tidy little value on Kayin Lee in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
