Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-

The Steelers kept it disciplined and banked a B-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Steelers took Monroe Freeling a full 27 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

The Freeling pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

The Lew value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Makai Lemon
In slot 21 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick53 Rnd2 John Mateer
A reach on John Mateer in the Round 2 slot; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76 Rnd3 Connor Lew
Connor Lew slipping to pick 76 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick85 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
A curious use of pick No. 85. Interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Monroe Freeling did not.
Pick99 Rnd3 Diego Pavia
Good price on Diego Pavia in the 99th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick121 Rnd4 Jalon Kilgore
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jalon Kilgore at No. 121. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick136 Rnd4 Mike Washington Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Mike Washington Jr. at slot 136, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick160 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
Nothing to complain about; Davison Igbinosun went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick213 Rnd6 Tristan Leigh
No drama and no debate, Tristan Leigh went about where he belonged in the 213th pick. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick214 Rnd6 Barion Brown
Barion Brown at pick No. 214 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick224 Rnd7 Lawson Luckie
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Lawson Luckie. It fills a real need, too.
Pick237 Rnd7 Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney at pick 237 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
