FutureA
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Jets. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Jets reached some 151 spots for Mitchell Melton, and value like that does not grow back. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Jets indulged a want in Allen while a need in interior defensive lineman and running back stayed open. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In No. 13 they get a No. 1 receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick18
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a three-down second-level presence at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38
Rnd2
Tyreak Sapp
Tyreak Sapp at the 38th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick47
Rnd2
CJ Allen
A want over a need in the 47th pick: CJ Allen adds a linebacker while interior defensive lineman and running back keeps waiting.
Pick104
Rnd4
Diego Pavia
Diego Pavia in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick177
Rnd5
Duce Robinson
Duce Robinson at slot 177 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick194
Rnd6
Earnest Greene III
Earnest Greene III in slot 194 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick203
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at the 203rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick212
Rnd6
Cam Calhoun
By-the-book stuff, Cam Calhoun at Round 6, Pick 32 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick218
Rnd7
Raylen Wilson
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Raylen Wilson. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick239
Rnd7
Mitchell Melton
They talked themselves into Mitchell Melton at the 239th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick254
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in pick 254 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick256
Rnd7
Smith Snowden
Smith Snowden in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
