FutureB-
The Chargers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Hayden Conner at the Round 6 slot is 69 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Schwesinger pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In No. 28 they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick56
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 24 with a little surplus value in JT Tuimoloau. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick86
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
The board had Carson Schwesinger higher than pick 86, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick91
Rnd3
Gunnar Helm
By-the-book stuff, Gunnar Helm at slot 91 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick102
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
The board had cheaper options than Cam Skattebo at the 102nd pick, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick114
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joshua Farmer. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125
Rnd4
Jake Majors
They took Jake Majors at par in pick No. 125, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick129
Rnd4
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at slot 174 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick176
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at No. 176 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick181
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
They went early on KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the 181st pick, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick199
Rnd6
Hayden Conner
They reached into another round for Hayden Conner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick209
Rnd6
Davin Vann
They talked themselves into Davin Vann at Round 6, Pick 33, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick211
Rnd6
Howard Cross III
A reach for Howard Cross III in pick 211; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick214
Rnd6
Simeon Barrow Jr.
Simeon Barrow Jr. at the 214th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick228
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton at slot 228 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick230
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III at the 230th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
