Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Chargers and Starks: B-.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Chargers watched Malaki Starks slide 28 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

Reaching for Oben left real value on the table behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
They paid sticker price for Kenneth Grant in No. 22, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick55 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in the Round 2 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick86 Rnd3 Isaiah Bond
Isaiah Bond at slot 86 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick125 Rnd4 Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones at Round 4, Pick 23 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick158 Rnd5 Mitchell Evans
A clean, defensible pick in pick 158 with a little surplus value in Mitchell Evans. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick181 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the 181st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick199 Rnd6 Jay Toia
No drama and no debate, Jay Toia went about where he belonged in pick No. 199. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209 Rnd6 RJ Oben
Value said wait; RJ Oben in the 209th overall pick says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick214 Rnd6 Kain Medrano
Kain Medrano at the 214th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick256 Rnd7 Akili Arnold
They robbed the room for Akili Arnold here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
