FutureA+
A polished, purposeful haul earns the Eagles a A-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Eagles did exactly that with Riley Williams in pick No. 221.
Getting Mateer where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In the end it comes back to Carnell Tate, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In pick No. 31 they get a home-run threat at receiver, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick92
Rnd3
Bud Clark
A safety of that caliber at pick 92 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick100
Rnd3
Dontay Corleone
Dontay Corleone at No. 100 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick110
Rnd4
Jack Endries
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jack Endries in slot 110. The roster fit checks out.
Pick127
Rnd4
Raylen Wilson
The board had Raylen Wilson higher than Round 4, Pick 25, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick137
Rnd4
Justice Haynes
Somehow Justice Haynes was still sitting there in the 137th overall pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick142
Rnd5
Nic Anderson
They let Nic Anderson come to them and pounced at pick 142. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick158
Rnd5
John Mateer
Steal is underselling it; John Mateer at the 158th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick161
Rnd5
Tree Babalade
Tree Babalade in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick163
Rnd5
Antonio Kite
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Antonio Kite at Round 5, Pick 25. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick169
Rnd5
Jamal Haynes
Jamal Haynes is a better player than slot 169 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick170
Rnd5
Cameron Calhoun
A tidy little value on Cameron Calhoun in No. 170, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick214
Rnd6
Riley Mahlman
They took Riley Mahlman at par in pick No. 214, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick221
Rnd7
Riley Williams
They talked themselves into Riley Williams at the 221st pick, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
