Draft Grade — Colts

FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Colts to a C+. The Colts put a flag in the ground for Seth McLaughlin, 43 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Warren steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They will answer for taking cornerback early while wide receiver, quarterback and other spots went begging.
That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
If Tyler Warren and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in slot 41, and they pounced on premier tight end value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
A tidy little value on Xavier Watts in the 51st pick, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick60
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
Azareye'h Thomas at the 60th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick63
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in pick 63 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick68
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Nice patience on Demetrius Knight Jr., who had no business lasting to pick No. 68. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick75
Rnd3
Darien Porter
A curious use of No. 75. Wide receiver, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Darien Porter did not.
Pick86
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
By-the-book stuff, Donovan Jackson at slot 86 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick102
Rnd4
Ajani Cornelius
They paid a round early for Ajani Cornelius in Round 4, Pick 1, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick105
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots to take Kevin Winston Jr., a safety that was not the priority.
Pick106
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick110
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
They talked themselves into Emery Jones Jr. at pick No. 110, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick121
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
A conviction pick on Darius Alexander at pick 121 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
Pick129
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Brashard Smith in No. 129. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa is a better player than the 144th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick155
Rnd5
Dorian Strong
They liked Dorian Strong enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 155. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick159
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in pick No. 159 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick188
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ollie Gordon II in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick191
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Seth McLaughlin well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick193
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A real head-scratcher, Jamon Dumas-Johnson in the 193rd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick219
Rnd7
Jonas Sanker
Jonas Sanker slipping to the 219th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick227
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
They read the board right and Cam Jackson was the payoff at slot 227. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick234
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
They took Cody Lindenberg at par in Round 7, Pick 16, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick243
Rnd7
Moliki Matavao
Moliki Matavao at Round 7, Pick 25 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
