Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall
A-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Raiders robbed the room for Reese. Final grade: A-. The Raiders ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
Getting Reese where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Raiders clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese in pick No. 26 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Nothing to complain about; Emmanuel Pregnon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick102
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
By-the-book stuff, D'Angelo Ponds at pick 102 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick117
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zachariah Branch in the Round 4 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick129
Rnd4
Kage Casey
Kage Casey in slot 129 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick134
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
The board had Trinidad Chambliss higher than the 134th overall pick, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Pick174
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
They took Gracen Halton at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick180
Rnd6
Bud Clark
A straight-up fair deal on Bud Clark at Round 6, Pick 1, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick183
Rnd6
Dane Key
Dane Key in No. 183 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick219
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
They paid sticker price for Riley Mahlman in pick No. 219, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick220
Rnd7
PJ Williams
PJ Williams at slot 220 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick241
Rnd7
Ricardo Hallman
Ricardo Hallman in the 241st pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
