Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
D
ValueC+

FutureB-
The Commanders bled value on every deal, hence the D. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Commanders took Malachi Lawrence at the Round 3 slot, roughly 60 spots before his name belonged. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They banked enough surplus on Stowers to cover a lot of smaller sins. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In slot 11 they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick71
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
They read the board right and Eli Stowers was the payoff at pick No. 71. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86
Rnd3
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139
Rnd5
Billy Schrauth
Good price on Billy Schrauth in the 139th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick145
Rnd5
Treydan Stukes
They liked Treydan Stukes enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 5, Pick 7. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick185
Rnd6
Matt Gulbin
Matt Gulbin in No. 185 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick196
Rnd6
Bud Clark
The board had cheaper options than Bud Clark at the Round 6 slot, and it noticed. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jimmy Rolder
Jimmy Rolder in pick 223 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
