Nobody dealt better than the Dolphins this weekend: C. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Dolphins spent slot 65 on Demon Clowney, a name the board had a full 359 spots lower. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
The Ramsey value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Dolphins indulged a want in Muhammad while a need in quarterback and tight end stayed open.
So much rides on Caleb Downs that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a ballhawk on the back end, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick33
Rnd2
Francis Mauigoa
Francis Mauigoa in the Round 2 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick34
Rnd2
Spencer Fano
Spencer Fano in slot 34 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick35
Rnd2
Avieon Terrell
They let Avieon Terrell come to them and pounced at the 35th pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick36
Rnd2
Keldric Faulk
Keldric Faulk at No. 36 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick37
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in pick 37 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick43
Rnd2
Josiah Trotter
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Josiah Trotter well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick44
Rnd2
Lander Barton
Lander Barton in the 44th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick65
Rnd3
Demon Clowney
A big swing on Demon Clowney at pick No. 65, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick67
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
A want over a need in the 67th pick: Malik Muhammad adds a cornerback while quarterback and tight end keeps waiting.
Pick75
Rnd3
Armoni Goodwin
Armoni Goodwin in pick 75 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick87
Rnd3
Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander at No. 87 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick90
Rnd3
Mason Reiger
A real head-scratcher, Mason Reiger in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick102
Rnd4
Logan Fano
They reached into another round for Logan Fano, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111
Rnd4
Kamari Ramsey
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and tight end to take Kamari Ramsey, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick117
Rnd4
VJ Payne
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 117 on VJ Payne with quarterback and tight end unsolved.
Pick133
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
They barely believed it either: Bryce Lance still on the board at the 133rd overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick134
Rnd4
Nolan Rucci
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nolan Rucci in No. 134, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick138
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Davison Igbinosun at cornerback with quarterback and tight end open.
Pick149
Rnd5
Vinny Anthony II
Vinny Anthony II at pick No. 149 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick171
Rnd5
Dane Key
Dane Key at Round 5, Pick 33 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174
Rnd5
Squirrel White
They left a pile of value on the table to take Squirrel White this early at the Round 5 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick180
Rnd6
Mycah Pittman
Mycah Pittman at No. 180 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick183
Rnd6
Trey Cooley
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trey Cooley. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick219
Rnd7
TJ Hall
No drama and no debate, TJ Hall went about where he belonged in pick 219. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick227
Rnd7
Fred Davis II
Value said wait; Fred Davis II in the 227th pick says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
