FutureB-
The Bears cashed the board's mistake on Scott: B+. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Keionte Scott got past him. The Bears do not have to explain a thing at Round 3, Pick 35. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. With quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy at the 63rd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick89
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Zakee Wheatley adds a safety and leaves quarterback untouched.
Pick99
Rnd3
Keionte Scott
Keionte Scott at pick No. 99 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick121
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
They read the board right and Bryce Lance was the payoff at the 121st overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick125
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
Keylan Rutledge at pick 125 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick126
Rnd4
Logan Jones
They took Logan Jones at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick132
Rnd4
Skyler Gill-Howard
No drama and no debate, Skyler Gill-Howard went about where he belonged in No. 132. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick139
Rnd5
David Oke
David Oke in slot 139 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick144
Rnd5
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in the 144th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
A tidy bit of business in pick 160, where Tanner Koziol graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick163
Rnd5
Nadame Tucker
Good price on Nadame Tucker in the 163rd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick173
Rnd5
Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at Round 5, Pick 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick189
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They liked Trey Zuhn III enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 189. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jaren Kanak
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaren Kanak in the Round 6 slot. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick215
Rnd6
Keyron Crawford
A reach for Keyron Crawford in pick No. 215; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick220
Rnd7
Isaac Smith
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaac Smith. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick231
Rnd7
London Humphreys
No edge and no loss on London Humphreys in slot 231; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Hall at No. 239, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick241
Rnd7
Rueben Owens II
Rueben Owens II at pick No. 241 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick248
Rnd7
Jalil Farooq
A straight-up fair deal on Jalil Farooq at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jamari Lyons
They jumped the gun on Jamari Lyons, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
