Draft Grade — Steelers

Best value of the weekend goes to the Steelers for Moss: B. The Steelers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Miller Moss, the No. 188 name on the board, in pick No. 214. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with edge rusher, linebacker and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The Lane pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot.
Pick53
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane in slot 53 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick63
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
A reasonable price with a little left over, A.J. Haulcy in No. 63. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Taking Jake Slaughter in the 76th pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick99
Rnd3
Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch at the 99th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick115
Rnd4
J.C. Davis
A surprising call. With edge rusher, linebacker and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 115 on J.C. Davis, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick121
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
Fair-plus on Trinidad Chambliss, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick131
Rnd4
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, linebacker and other spots to take Ar'maj Reed-Adams, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick135
Rnd4
Drew Allar
By-the-book stuff, Drew Allar at the 135th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick159
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
A slide stopped in No. 159, with Davison Igbinosun worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick213
Rnd6
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at slot 213 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick214
Rnd6
Miller Moss
They robbed the room for Miller Moss here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick224
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
No edge and no loss on Riley Mahlman in the 224th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
A reach on Jordan Hall in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249
Rnd7
Trey Holly
Trey Holly at pick No. 249 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick252
Rnd7
Colbie Young
No drama and no debate, Colbie Young went about where he belonged in pick 252. A need, and now a little less of one.
