A weekend the Commanders spent fighting the board, and losing. F. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Tyreak Sapp at the Round 3 slot, a reach of 31 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. A F, plain and simple.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Wheatley pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
They banked enough surplus on Wheatley to cover a lot of smaller sins.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with interior defensive lineman still staring back at them.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In No. 13 they get a three-down runner at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick30
Rnd1
Caleb Banks
In pick 30 they get a bendy edge with upside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick54
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Nice patience on Dillon Thieneman, who had no business lasting to the 54th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick68
Rnd3
Connor Lew
A clean, defensible pick in slot 68 with a little surplus value in Connor Lew. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick71
Rnd3
Tyreak Sapp
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyreak Sapp. The roster fit checks out.
Pick87
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
A want over a need in the 87th overall pick: Zakee Wheatley adds a safety while interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick88
Rnd3
Jake Golday
They let Jake Golday come to them and pounced at pick 88. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick100
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds at Round 3, Pick 36 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick111
Rnd4
Caden Curry
Caden Curry in pick No. 111 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick124
Rnd4
Eli Raridon
Eli Raridon in slot 124 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick130
Rnd4
Sam Roush
Sam Roush in No. 130 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick145
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Value with a capital V on Drew Allar in the 145th pick, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick162
Rnd5
Lander Barton
Lander Barton in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick185
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A conviction pick on Trey Zuhn III at the 185th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick196
Rnd6
Tristan Leigh
A reach on Tristan Leigh in Round 6, Pick 17; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223
Rnd7
Hykeem Williams
By-the-book stuff, Hykeem Williams at pick No. 223 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick227
Rnd7
Raheem Anderson II
A big swing on Raheem Anderson II at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
