Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA+
The Commanders found their guy under center in Mendoza: D+. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Commanders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
Everything downstream of Fernando Mendoza depends on Fernando Mendoza, and the building knows it. O'Neill has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
That Orange pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 1st overall pick they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick11
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In No. 11 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. More want than need.
Pick36
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Olaivavega Ioane at the Round 2 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick43
Rnd2
Brandon Cisse
Brandon Cisse at Round 2, Pick 11 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick57
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
Value with a capital V on Caleb Banks in the 57th pick, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick67
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy is a better player than pick 67 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick71
Rnd3
Max Klare
A quiet steal in slot 71: Max Klare for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick89
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
A slide stopped in pick No. 89, with Domonique Orange worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick102
Rnd4
Daylen Everette
A tidy bit of business in pick 102, where Daylen Everette graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick111
Rnd4
Malachi Lawrence
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malachi Lawrence in the 111th overall pick, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds slipping to slot 117 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick129
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Trinidad Chambliss at pick No. 129 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Eric Rivers
A clean, defensible pick in No. 134 with a little surplus value in Eric Rivers. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick145
Rnd5
Kage Casey
They let Kage Casey come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick163
Rnd5
Aaron Anderson
Aaron Anderson slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 25 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick174
Rnd5
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in the 174th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick180
Rnd6
Eric O'Neill
They reached into another round for Eric O'Neill, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick183
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A conviction pick on Trey Zuhn III at slot 183 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Raylen Wilson
They paid sticker price for Raylen Wilson in pick 185, and that is fine. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick196
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
They took Bryce Foster at par in pick No. 196, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick219
Rnd7
Keyron Crawford
A premium they did not need to pay, Keyron Crawford a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick223
Rnd7
Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney at Round 7, Pick 7 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
No edge and no loss on Riley Mahlman in the 227th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
No drama and no debate, Jordan Hall went about where he belonged in No. 239. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick241
Rnd7
Micah Morris
By-the-book stuff, Micah Morris at the 241st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
