Draft Grade — Jaguars
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesC+ FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Jaguars and Smith: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Brashard Smith had no business being available in the Round 6 slot, and the Jaguars did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
In No. 5 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. More want than need.
Pick36 Rnd2 Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon at slot 36 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick70 Rnd3 Harold Fannin Jr.
Nice patience on Harold Fannin Jr., who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick102 Rnd3 Savion Williams
Savion Williams is a better player than Round 3, Pick 38 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick107 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
They did well to land Jared Wilson in pick No. 107, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick126 Rnd4 Nohl Williams
By-the-book stuff, Nohl Williams at the 126th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick130 Rnd4 Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the 130th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick142 Rnd5 Anthony Belton
Somehow Anthony Belton was still sitting there in pick 142, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick182 Rnd6 O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune in pick No. 182 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick194 Rnd6 Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith in slot 194 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Pick221 Rnd7 Jay Higgins
Steal is underselling it; Jay Higgins at the 221st overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
