Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Chargers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. The Chargers spent real capital to be 38 picks early on Ahmed Hassanein, and the board is going to hold them to it.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Marshall Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
Grey Zabel in pick No. 22 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick55
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
No edge and no loss on Jayden Higgins in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander in the 86th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick125
Rnd4
Terrance Ferguson
They read the board right and Terrance Ferguson was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 23. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick158
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
A premium they did not need to pay, Seth McLaughlin a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick181
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Nothing to complain about; Ollie Gordon II went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick199
Rnd6
Ahmed Hassanein
Ahmed Hassanein in the 199th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick209
Rnd6
Caleb Ransaw
Caleb Ransaw at the 209th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. slipping to slot 214 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick256
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
By-the-book stuff, Ty Hamilton at pick 256 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
