FutureB-
The Raiders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Raiders spent Round 4, Pick 34 on Eric McAlister, a name the board had a full 39 spots lower. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher, running back and other spots went begging.
Reese falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In slot 2 they get a downhill hitter at safety. Need was not the driver here.
Pick18
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Pick36
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Anthony Hill Jr. adds a linebacker and leaves edge rusher, running back and other spots untouched.
Pick67
Rnd3
Carter Smith
A premium they did not need to pay, Carter Smith a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick82
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
Malik Muhammad in the 82nd overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick102
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
They paid up for Trinidad Chambliss at the 102nd pick when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Pick117
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
Value with a capital V on Zachariah Branch in pick No. 117, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick134
Rnd4
Eric McAlister
This one needs a full-page explanation: Eric McAlister in the 134th overall pick, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick174
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
By-the-book stuff, Gracen Halton at No. 174 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick180
Rnd6
Bud Clark
No drama and no debate, Bud Clark went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick183
Rnd6
Charles Jagusah
A reasonable price with a little left over, Charles Jagusah in Round 6, Pick 4. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick219
Rnd7
Ricardo Hallman
Value said wait; Ricardo Hallman in slot 219 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
