Draft Grade — Chiefs

FutureC+
The Chiefs bled value on every deal, hence the D-. The phones were a trap the Chiefs kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
The Zuhn III pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Chiefs indulged a want in Haulcy while a need in quarterback and edge rusher stayed open.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. That Daniels pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In pick No. 12 they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick13
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In the 13th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in pick 43 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick68
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 68 on A.J. Haulcy with quarterback and edge rusher unsolved.
Pick74
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Eli Stowers in slot 74. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick114
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in the 114th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
No edge and no loss on Jacob Rodriguez in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick177
Rnd5
CJ Daniels
CJ Daniels is a better player than Round 5, Pick 38 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick189
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter at No. 189 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick192
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Zuhn III in slot 192, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick194
Rnd6
Quinten Joyner
They paid a round early for Quinten Joyner in the 194th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
