FutureB+
The Panthers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Panthers would have aced it. Davin Vann at pick No. 230 is 44 spots clear of where he belonged. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Farmer pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and running back still on the board. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 24th overall pick they get a two-high chess piece. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
Good price on Tyleik Williams in the 44th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick54
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
By-the-book stuff, Donovan Ezeiruaku at Round 2, Pick 22 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick57
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
A premium they did not need to pay, Maxwell Hairston a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick74
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger in No. 74 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick97
Rnd3
Savion Williams
A reasonable price with a little left over, Savion Williams in slot 97. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick111
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the safety. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick114
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 12. Quarterback and running back needed the pick; an interior defensive lineman in Joshua Farmer did not.
Pick140
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
No drama and no debate, Hollin Pierce went about where he belonged in the 140th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick146
Rnd5
Tyler Baron
They paid a round early for Tyler Baron in No. 146, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick163
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
The board had cheaper options than Kyle Williams at the 163rd overall pick, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick204
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
They paid sticker price for Luke Lachey in slot 204, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
They jumped the gun on Desmond Watson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick230
Rnd7
Davin Vann
Davin Vann at pick 230 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
